Do you need a large dog house or a smaller dog house? Do you want a flat roof or a sloped roof? What materials should you use to build your dog house, so it will hold up in the weather? Dog house blueprints are important to have regardless of the design you end up with. Do you want to create your own plans for a do-it-yourself (DIY) project?  Maybe you could get free dog house plans from the internet.  Or, would you rather buy some dependable plans that are true and tested from the internet? You need to consider the following things when creating plans for a dog house.

Do you have more than one dog?  You may want to check into dog house plans for multiple dogs.  There are various designs for duplex dog houses available.  You can create a plan for two dogs to sleep together, or put a dividing wall between your pets.  That may be a better idea.  Some build a doghouse with a removable wall. Some prefer to build two separate dog houses. If you build two dog houses, you can follow the same plans for both.  In your plans, you may want to paint them different colors if you want some variety.

When planning your dog house, you need to start by measuring your dog. This will determine the size of the dog house.  In cold winter weather, your doghouse should be large enough for your pet to be comfortable, but small enough for the dog’s body heat to help heat up the inside.  A good general plan for sizing your dog house is as follows:  the length of the doghouse should be approximately 1 ½ times the length of your dog; the width should be about 2/3 of the dog’s length; and the height should be between 1 ¼ and 1 ½ times the dog’s height.  The door opening should be about ¾ of the height of the dog.  If you have a small dog, you will want to find plans on how to build a small dog house. If your best friend is a lot bigger, you will want dog house plans for large dogs.

Once you have determined the size you want your dog house, you need to develop blueprints for a dog house. That is, you need detailed plans on how your dog house structure is going to be put together.  If you haven’t done woodworking projects before, you may want to buy some plans that have been designed specifically for you.  Free dog house plans may be tempting, but generally speaking, you get what you pay for.  With these plans, you may at best end up with one or two pages of instruction.  If you are a beginning woodworker, go with a step by step guide.  You may pay $10 to $20 bucks, but it will save you a lot of frustration. You can buy insulated dog house plans here.  In fact, these plans include a porch for your dog to lie on. It contains 47 pages of detail on how to build a dog house step by step.

First of all, it is important to take note of where in the world you live.  Do you live in a Mediterranean tropical location, where it seldom gets that cold? If so, an insulated dog house may not be what you are looking for.  If you live in the North East part of the country, or in the North Central part of the U.S., you may want to include insulation in your 2012 dog house plans.

Consider how much rain and snow you get each year.  If you get a lot of rain, you want to make sure your dog house roof is sealed well, to keep out unwanted moisture.  This means your roof needs to be of a good quality with good shingle material.  If you get much snow, you may want to plan on having a sloped roof.  This keeps the snow from piling on top of the dog house.

Part of building a dog house plans, should include all of the materials you are going to need. Once your dog house plans are complete, you’re ready to get started.
