2012 Insulated Dog House Plans
Dog houses
help keep a dog cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, as well
as keep them out of wet and windy weather. But just like a house that
isn’t insulated, if your dog house isn’t insulated, it doesn’t keep much
cold out during the bitter cold weather, or keep much heat out in hot
weather. That’s where an insulated dog house can be of great benefit.
Check out our plans for an insulated dog house with a porch.
These insulated dog house
plans give you step-by-step directions to a wonderful and

When
insulating your dog house, it is important to insulate the floor, roof,
and all of the walls. The floor should also be elevated above the
ground. There is a Styrofoam insulation that fits well inside thinner
walls and other tight areas. Holes and cracks also need to be sealed if
possible. You can buy foam insulation in a spray can that works well in
those areas. Any area where air can get through can cut back on the
effectiveness of an insulated dog house.
One thing
that will help regulate your dog house’s climate, is designing it in a
way to use the dog’s body heat in the heating process, during the
winter. To design a house for your dog, first measure its length and its
height. An ideal size for a dog house is to make it about 1 1/2 times as
wide as your dog is long. Make it about ¾ as deep as your dog is long
and make its height about 1 ¼ to 1 ½ times the height of your dog. This
makes the dog house comfortable, but small enough for the dog’s body
heat to make a difference.
It’s
important, when building a
dog
house that is insulated to also buy a good
insulated door for your dog house. There are several different dog house
doors available on Amazon. Another item that can really help in the cold
months of the year is a doghouse heater. You can also purchase a dog
house heater that plugs into an AC outlet. This can work well if your
dog house is positioned close enough to an outlet, however you may have
to run an extension cord. Be careful when running extension cords as
this can become a hazard for electrical shock and for fire. Make sure
your dog isn’t one that chews on cords.
Another
thing you can do is to buy a padded dog pad for your dog to sleep on.
There are a number of thermo dog pads available, even ones that plug in.
If you plan on doing something like this, you may want to add an
electrical outlet to the inside of your dog house.
